What's Shiny Today: Maui Edition
- Every home in Hawaii -- vacation condos included -- are patrolled by
geckos. The ones we
actually saw were outside, but since we didn't see any bugs inside either,
their presence was felt.
- Thanks to the kind folks at Surfing Goat Dairy, I've reconciled with goatkind.
We took a tour of their farm in Kula and bought a bunch of their cheese, which
is really tasty. Almost every goat on the farm tried to lick our fingers.
And there are few things cuter than tiny goat kids, who bleat about an
octave higher than their parents. (They looked something like the ones
here.
Shoulda brought my camera.)
- The road to Hana didn't seem as grueling as it's made
out to be -- whether this was because of lots of fresh pavement and well-signed
passing zones or because the twisties were much like the ones at home, I'm
not sure. In any case, there's gorgeous scenery aplenty, including rainforest
and some stunning views of the ocean.
- Good idea: Essence of Iao
soaps and candles, which have unusual, yummy and subtle scents. Bad idea:
Island Soap & Candle Works. Their
shop in Maalea had such an overwhelming scent that TheBoy couldn't even
set foot in it, and I lasted barely half a pass before fleeing for air.
- Nicest town to visit:
Paia. It was
pretty and peaceful and had plenty of good restaurants that served things
other than surf and turf. It was a little too much like home when a guy
tried to sell us pot, though.
- If you go to Maui, chances are you'll at least think about going to
Haleakala for sunrise.
The tour will pick you up around 2 AM, so unless you're a serious morning
person you'll probably think twice about it. The park and the crater are
very much worth visiting, especially if you like to hike, but if you want
to see the sunrise, you'll probably be happier seeing it
here. This time
of year, sunrise is around 9 AM Pacific and noon Eastern.
- Best souvenirs: Hilo Hattie's,
the classic purveyor of aloha shirts and other "aloha gifts."
- Since TheBoy didn't get his fill of tiki kitsch in Maui, a drinking
expedition here is imminent.
