Life in a New Cube
I'm been getting so lax about updates. It must be this decadent, decadent new cube I'm in. All the sunlight and fresh air I'm getting. OK, so it's been foggy all week, but it's still more sun than I got before.
We used to work in a locked room with no windows and concrete walls on 3 sides. It's since been decided that, while we still need the locked room to store equipment in, we should actually spend most of our time on the same floor as the rest of IT. So this week we made the move into the cube farm.
Pros of our new digs:
- The aforementioned fresh air and sunlight
- Closer to the coffee pot
- On the same floor as IT and not sales/marketing, so toilet paper shortages
in the women's room are a thing of the past
- Easy to check how bad traffic is on the route home
- Actual walls to pin decorations on
- No more jumping up to answer door
- Rumor has it that our presence on their floor (or possibly just our
presence anywhere outside of our locked room) makes HR nervous. We're bringing
down property values in the cube farm, and scaring HR is one of life's great joys. Cool!
Cons:
- On the same floor as IT, so manager types can now drop by much more
easily
- Easy to see homeless people peeing in the alley
- Need to lock up valuables so they don't wander off
- Our group's fridge is still behind locked doors, but several floors down
- Being in the open means it's harder to talk smack about users
That last one will take some getting used to, but all in all it's a good deal.
