What's Shiny Today: Dead Or Just Creepy Edition

  • In this week's Urban Animal column: a rather obsessive guinea pig owner. In one of many scary statements, she told the reporter that she has "Egyptian funerals" for her recently departed guinea pigs, equipping them with carrots and such for the afterlife. No word on whether she also removes their organs and puts them in tiny funerary jars.

  • Miss Cleo -- busted! Her psychic hotlines have to shut down, forgive $500,000 in back charges and cough up $5 mil to the FTC. According to Reuters, the FTC repeatedly tried to bring up the fact that Miss Cleo wasn't actually Jamaican but born in LA, but she claimed her 5th amemdment right not to discuss it.

  • On Fametracker's Ten Least Essential Holiday Films, the upcoming Rob Schneider vehicle The Hot Chick only ranks 10th. Shouldn't a movie where Rob Schneider plays a teenage girl be less essential than that?

  • If you've ever needed proof that the funeral industry is way creepier than it needs to be, check out this list of casket features. What I want to know is why the interior upholstery needs to have a "soft, springy feel." Shouldn't the occupant be beyond caring? It makes the name of this business look downright tasteful.

  • Larry King, ever with his finger on the pulse of popular culture, says in his King's Things "web column": "2. I'm beginning to think that Eminem may be a major showbiz figure. One thing for sure is that somebody likes him ..." Duh, ya think, Lar? Why do they keep letting this creepy old schmuck on the air?

  • Forgot to mention these after the election: the Berkeley coffee measure lost, and the unjust eviction measure won, despite the huge wads of landlord cash being thrown at the anti- campaign. If you're still bummed out about how the election went in your town, take some small comfort that somewhere, somehow, people voted the right way.

    Google hits:

sizzler ebola (my favorite ever, so far)
crontab time format run-part (Hey, was my tutorial useful?)
"best ear covers from noise to sleep"

And the overwhelming favorite, by about a 5 to 1 ratio... hot buns. ( What's Shiny Today: Hot Buns Edition comes up 9th on the list. 9th! I don't get it either.)
