What's Shiny Today
- Sylvia Ann Hewlett's inflammatory book Creating a Life didn't even
crack the top 10 on the New York Times bestseller list despite all the hype.
The people quoted in this article are befuddled by this and came up with
a bunch of theories as to why. Needless to say, the idea that many of the
high-achieving, 40+ women out there who don't have kids aren't tortured with
regret over their life choices wasn't on the list.
- Fametracker has put out its list
of the
Ten Least Essential Films of the Summer. (I would actually have been
interested in seeing Windtalkers if it hadn't been for the ads
all over public transit with Nicolas Cage doing his Action Face.)
- Peaches are back in season!
- Congress is learning some new tricks from baseball owners, the Onion would have you believe. A shame there's no threat of lobbyists going on strike any time soon...
- CitySearch had a link on their
front page reading, "Krispy Kreme: overhyped?" I was expecting some
hard-hitting investigation about donut overvaluation in the post-dot-com
economy, but alas, all it was were reviews of the local Krispy Kreme outlets.
- I came into the living room this morning to find TheBoy watching a 700 Club
segment about this line of Christian
cosmetics. A chunk of the profits go to "feeding hungry people and supporting
the CBN ministry," says the chipper, middle-aged woman whose life was changed by God-given non-freeze-dried royal jelly.
"I'm thinking, why are they selling this?" says TheBoy. "If they loved Jesus enough, they wouldn't need it. Only sinners have bad skin."
